4 Strategies to be a Reliable, Local Real Estate Agent

Featured image

As a real estate agent, you know you don’t just help people buy and sell homes. At times you will be asked to do so much more — serve as a consultant, a counselor and a problem solver, among others.

Your clients may feel confused and overwhelmed when they listen to media reports about the state of the real estate market. Many of those sources share click-bait headlines. That’s why it’s imperative that you get your data and analysis from trusted sources. You can then relay valid information to your clients with confidence.

Know Your Market and Beyond — Be sure to consistently monitor local housing inventory, price changes, sales data and trends so that you can provide accurate and up-to-date information to your clients. Stay abreast of changes in zoning laws, regulations and developments that may impact your local real estate market so you can inform your clients.

The cliche that “all real estate is local” is true, but it’s also important to know what’s happening nationally and regionally. With many people moving each year, it’s important to be able to share data from other parts of the country as well as in your area. Knowing what is happening locally, as well as opposed to the big picture nationwide, also helps put things in perspective.

Immerse Yourself in Your Community — Get to know others in your community through civic groups, business networking groups, houses of worship, schools, volunteer initiatives and more.

Just about every community has an event benefiting a local nonprofit. Supporting these events is an amazing way to show community spirit. But don’t just offer financial sponsorship — commit to helping out at the event. As Brian Buffini, the chairman and founder of Buffini & Company always says, “Face to face is best!”

Make it a point to follow your community’s local government — it can help keep you in the know when it comes to the latest news, regulations and upcoming projects. Get to know your local officials and their perspectives. And consider serving on a board yourself, such as a planning or zoning board. It can offer you a valuable insider’s view into what is happening.

Cultivate Connections with Industry Peers —Expand your business network to include other local associated professionals such as mortgage brokers, home inspectors and service providers. Being able to offer names of trusted professionals who service clients the same way you do will help to build your credibility. It will also give you an opportunity to give and receive referrals.

Build Trust with Local Insights — Provide value-added content with informative blog posts, newsletters or social media posts. Don’t just share real estate news though — include other local news too such as important upcoming community meetings, projects or events.  Consistently sharing valuable, timely, well-curated content is key.  You’ll become known as “the one” to contact if anyone has a question about what is happening in the community.
