Want to See Your Real Estate Business Grow? Start Writing Notes!
When was the last time you received an actual handwritten personal note? Chances are if you did, you remember it, because nowadays it’s a rare thing. While many of us prefer the immediacy and convenience of email, instant messaging, or text, a handwritten note is not only a more personal gesture but a powerful marketing tool.
When you take the time to send someone a personal note, it leaves a positive, lasting impression. You stand out from the rest. It can help you build a database of quality personal and professional relationships and increase your chances of gaining referrals.
Brian Buffini, the iconic chairman and founder of Buffini & Company is a staunch believer in the power of handwritten notes.
“Nothing in my career took less time, cost less money, and produced bigger results than notes,” he said.
Use these tips to get started on writing your own personal notes and watch your own success grow!
Choose a Mix of Cards
You can get a nice selection of cards online or at any major retailer. They need not be expensive but should have a pleasing image on the front and be blank. Use caution when choosing though — what you might find a funny image or verbiage may not be to someone else.
Referral Maker® PRO Members get 50 thoughtfully and professionally designed cards to use each month as part of their marketing kit. Members sometimes offer extras or trade notecards with others on the Buffini Members Facebook page.
A stamp that is seasonal or commemorative adds a nice touch, too. And if you’re a Buffini Member, don’t forget to add an “Oh, by the way…” ® sticker on the back of your envelope!
Put the ‘Person’ in ‘Personalization’
Brian suggests putting a stack of cards on your laptop or desk each night, so you’re more likely to write them first thing in the morning. He adds that taking a moment to think about each person and then writing a line or two about their circumstances makes it even more personal.
Perhaps it’s an introduction to another client, congratulations for a special event or anniversary or a message to say, “I thought of you when…” It could even be something fun like “I heard your favorite team won!” or conversely, “Sorry your team lost! Better luck next year!”
It doesn’t need to be lengthy — just a quick line or two will do. But make sure you take the time to write legibly and without typos. A messy note your client cannot decipher will not impress.
Once you get started, you will find it gets easier and more enjoyable to write cards each day.
And who knows, you might even get some cards yourself back from your delighted clients!
Here are a few examples of personal notes if you need some inspiration.
