Everything of value – from the greatest financial institutions to the strongest relationships – is built on trust. Trust can be your most vulnerable weakness – and your biggest expense – or it can be your greatest asset. Brian recently interviewed global trust expert David Horsager to learn how you can become a trusted leader for your business, your customers and your family. Here are some of the top takeaways:
Clarity
Many people mistakenly believe that being complex makes you seem smart. The truth is, over-complexifying something beyond what’s needed means that clarity is lost, which always results in a loss of trust. If you want to build trust, you need to be clear.
Compassion
For others to trust you, they need to know that you care about them and their perspective. When leaders are only concerned with themselves, their people have a hard time being accountable to them. If you don’t have compassion for others, trust will not exist.
Character
We don’t trust people unless they have a moral character and integrity. If you’re consistent in your thoughts, words and deeds and you’re clear about your decision-making values, you will build trust with others.
Competency
We trust those who stay fresh and relevant and capable. If you’re selling or leading the same way that you were years ago, you won’t be trusted. This is why coaching is absolutely vital: input equals output – if you’re not getting better all the time, then you’re losing.
Commitment
People trust those who stay committed in the face of adversity. If you think someone will jump ship when you need them most, you’re not going to trust them. But if you know they’ll stay the course with you no matter what difficulties or challenges arise, trust will be there.
Connection
We trust people who are willing to connect and collaborate. If you insist on going it alone, you’re unwilling to share resources for the betterment of everyone or you always have to take the credit, you will never build trust with others.
Contribution
Being trustworthy isn’t just about having compassion or a moral character, you have to deliver results too! Contributing, meeting expected outcomes and performing are all key to establishing trust.
Consistency
The little things done consistently make the biggest difference. Every small interaction you have in work and in life will either increase or decrease trust. To the extent that you’re consistent in your actions, you will be trusted.
Without trust, enterprises fail, influence is destroyed and leaders lose people. To learn more about building trust, tune in to the latest episode of “It’s a Good Life”.
