Your attitude is your key to success. However, maintaining a positive attitude may be challenging at times. It’s easy to come home at the end of a long day and zone out in front of the television or scroll through social media and have hours drift by.
In order to stay positive, it’s essential that we watch our intake, our associations and our affirmations.
Intake is what you read, watch and listen to. If your intake is on the negative side, you’ll likely have a more negative attitude. Remember, garbage in, garbage out.
- Reduce your exposure to negativity. Seek out positive books, magazines, websites, television shows, movies, music, etc. The more you fill your mind with positive stuff, the better you’ll feel!
- Write yourself a prescription for positivity each day. Read an uplifting quote, wind down at night with an uplifting movie or listen to a positive song.
- Never stop learning. Learning allows you to grow personally and professionally. Take a class or workshop or take a seminar. Whatever you do, never stop learning.
Associations are the people in your life. We’ve all had those friends or acquaintances who seem to dwell in negativity. But life is too short for that. Don’t let someone else’s attitude drag you down.
- Make a list of all those who build you up and tear you down. Spend more time with those who build you up and less time with those who don’t.
- Seek out positive influences. Seek out people who seem to ooze positivity. Being around them will help you improve your attitude.
- Seek out role models and mentors. Find role models and mentors who are not only positive, but successful too. Tap into their knowledge and let them help you along your journey.
Affirmations are the things that you say to yourself. We are often our own worst critics. Truth is the things we say to ourselves we’d never say to others. However, by consciously seeking out positive affirmations, we can silence our inner critics.
-
Monitor your self-talk. When you catch yourself criticizing, stop for a second and change the script. Find something positive, and then another.
- Tame the tongue. Similar to monitoring your self-talk, mind what you say in general. Words have power—make sure yours uplift instead of tear down.
- Be an encourager. When you feel discouraged, that’s the time to encourage others around you. Providing them with encouragement will help you feel more positive too.
