We all want to succeed in life, but sometimes it can feel as if we’ve been dealt a hand that’s impossible to play. Faced with difficulties, we struggle with doubt, we’re indecisive, and we can even develop a tendency to give up. When that happens, our true talents lie dormant and we never get to experience our full potential or what could have been. How can we change this trajectory? We must resolve to have an “all-in” attitude and mindset – no matter the cards that life deals us. Being all in means that we put all of our available resources into our efforts, in spite of the hurdles and setbacks we might encounter. Yes, life can deal everyone challenging cards, but it’s all about how you play your hand.

Here’s how you can develop an all-in attitude and mindset:

First, you must be committed. Commitment is staying loyal to what you said you were going to do, long after the mood in which you said you were going to do it has left you! Commitment means being resolved and determined, no matter what. This sort of resolve is the backbone of an all in attitude.

Second, you must establish priorities in every area of your life – spiritual, personal, relational, fiscal, and vocational. As H.L. Hunt said, “Decide what you want, decide what you are willing to exchange for it, establish your priorities, and go to work.”

Third, you must be willing to sacrifice. Sacrifice is almost a dirty word in our culture today. But you have to really give of yourself and sacrifice time, energy, and effort if you want to be all in. Make sacrifices today for what you can be tomorrow.

Fourth, you must learn that being all in is an attitude of the heart. When you pursue an all in attitude and take action, fears are going to arise. They can be silly, irrational fears but they can still paralyze you from being all in. The truth is, it’s precisely when you’re getting closer to being all in that you feel fear. But that’s also when you get more focus and more passion…and when your competition backs down. Make your decision, and jump!

Finally, you must keep a clear picture of what you desire in front of you. Steve Jobs once said, “If you are working on something exciting that you really care about, you don’t have to be pushed. The vision pulls you.” Your vision should be what pulls you along on the days you’re having doubts and setbacks. It’s a vital part of being all in.

Being all in is the price of the good life, so play the cards you’ve been dealt, place all of your chips on the table, and get ready to win at the game of life!
