In today’s uber-connected, media-saturated world, it seems everywhere we turn we encounter divisiveness. We divide ourselves into “us” versus “them” and villainize those who are different. Add to that, our culture is more entitled than ever; we focus more on “me” than “we.” BUT, it doesn’t have to be this way.
In his new book, “The Third Option: Hope for a Racially Divided Nation,” retired NFL star and pastor of the Rock Church in San Diego, Miles McPherson, suggests what’s missing from the conversation: Honor. He explains that instead of focusing on what divides us, we should focus on what we have in common—that we’re all made in the image of God.
What are your biases?
Most of us don’t have much exposure to people different from ourselves. We tend to live in communities that look, live and worship as we do; we keep to our little worlds. Our “in-group” is the group that’s like us; the “out group” is everyone else.
The best way to bridge the divide is to meet and get to know people who aren’t like us. Instead of “othering” them, recognize your differences and honor them. It’s about identifying our blind spots and working to address them.
