We all have a ‘mindset’ – whether we’re aware of it or not. If we feel our abilities can grow over time and hard work will pay off, that’s a growth mindset. And if we feel stuck and that no matter what we do, nothing will ever change, that’s commonly termed a fixed mindset.
If it’s the latter, don’t worry. Everyone, even the most experienced and successful real estate agents, feels that way at one time or another. The good news is you don’t have to stay there.
Developing a growth mindset is like developing any kind of muscle — all you need is the right tools, repetition and encouragement. Take the time to work on this and watch how your real estate business will start to take off!
Here’s an action plan to help you get started:
- Resolve to Work the Right Way
It’s a cliche but it’s the truth — you don’t need to work harder, you need to work smarter. If things don’t seem to be going your way, sometimes you need an outside perspective. This is where an experienced real estate coach can help you. They can shine a light on any bad habits, offer strategic steps to take and support you with encouragement and accountability.
- Embrace Your Challenges
No doubt overcoming challenges can be difficult, but is there any sweeter feeling than knowing you persevered and made it to the other side? No world leader, sports star or successful businessperson has made it to the top easily. Every one of them would tell you that there were many, many times they felt like giving up. But what if, as motivational speaker Ed Mylett has said, “The one time you gave up turns out to be the time you succeeded?”
Keep at it, no matter what!
- Learn from Your Mistakes
Learn to embrace, then move on from your mistakes. Too many times, we let one error derail all our progress. Again, learn from past leaders. They were not perfect nor are you. Sure, mistakes can be embarrassing, but they’re also great real-world examples to learn from. Remember the words of Thomas Edison — “I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.”
If he can make mistakes and move on, so can you!
- Encourage Feedback
No one likes to be criticized. It not only makes us feel bad, but also defensive. Often that feeling comes from a place of fear or insecurity. We say to ourselves, “I’m just not good enough!”
But to grow, listen to those you trust. It could be a real estate coach, a mentor or a peer. It must be someone whose opinion you value and who cares about your growth. Try to frame feedback as valuable insights instead of criticism.
- Fill Your Mind with Positivity
In a world filled with more ways than ever to absorb information it’s imperative you fill your mind with valuable, trusted and positive content. It’s all too easy to go down the proverbial rabbit hole online and suddenly you find you’ve wasted precious time.
Memoirs and biographies are a great resource to learn from the triumphs (and mistakes) of others. Use your time in your car to listen to podcasts. An excellent place to start is Brian Buffini’s “It’s a Good Life” podcast where he talks to leaders from all walks of life. Each session is like a free mini masterclass from an expert!
