What No One Tells You About Money with Jade Warshaw | Buffini Podcast

What No One Tells You About Money with Jade Warshaw | Buffini Podcast

Jade Warshaw approaches money with perspective, shaped by real challenges and the steady work it takes to move forward. She doesn’t just “talk the talk” — she has lived through her own personal financial challenges and come out stronger than ever.

She now uses her story to help others as a personal finance coach, author, and co-host of The Ramsey Show, one of the most listened-to radio programs in the U.S.

In a recent podcast episode of It’s a Good Life, host Brian Buffini spoke with Jade about how she and her husband worked their way out of significant debt and the strategies she teaches others to do the same. She also discussed her new book, What No One Tells You About Money: The Real Key to Getting Unstuck from Someone Who’s Been There. (Dave Ramsey wrote the foreword for this book.)

Overwhelmed by Debt

It was after she and her husband finished college and got married that the couple realized they were facing serious debt — approximately $460,000.

“It’s a big deal. What you’re really talking about is a sense of hopelessness, which is that feeling of looking at a situation and feeling like there’s no way out,” she said of others who also are facing similar circumstances.

She pointed out that our fast-paced, easy-to-access-everything-we-want culture does not help create the best environment to rebuild financial stability.

Tough choices must prevail, she noted.

“If you’re embarking on a journey with your money, you are going to have to embrace endurance, full stop.”

In the couple’s case, endurance meant working 39 weeks a year at sea as musicians, with Jade also working as a Whitney Houston impersonator for nearly 10 years.

Get in Alignment with Your Partner

Jade noted that one of the top reasons couples decide to divorce is money. Communication is key, but it has to be the right kind of communication, so both parties feel heard and not attacked.

“Make it more about what you’re doing and what we’re doing and less about ‘Here’s what you did, here’s your problem, here’s what I need you to do,’” she said.

She added that it is crucial that these are ongoing conversations.

“Things with your spouse, a lot of times it’s a ball of thread that takes a long time to unwind,” she stressed. “And when we’re talking about something as important as money, it can take a long time to get on the same page.”

Understanding the Three Parts of Money

Jade said when it comes to understanding the impact of money, there are three equal parts, but most people only talk about two.

  1. Numbers — These are the basic questions we ask and need answers to, such as how much money we have and how much we need.
  2. Behaviors — We need to acknowledge and understand the things we do — and don’t do — concerning money, especially when it comes to saving
  3. Emotional — This factor, Jade said, is often avoided because it’s the most difficult. That’s because it’s closely tied to our relationships and experiences, past and present.

“The way you grow up obviously feeds into how you view not just money, but how you view life in general,” she explained. “I think that’s important to note because you get to decide if you’re going to learn from it, if you’re going to keep it the same, if you’re going to change it. That’s your choice to make.”

Although you may have a very valid reason to feel hopeless, you cannot give up, she stressed, because a “good reason can very quickly become a bad excuse.”

“So it behooves us to work through these things and figure out why so we can start to make changes. We can change. We’re very adaptable as human beings.”
