Living in today’s often stressful world, it’s no surprise that burnout, overwhelm and anxiety are at an all-time high. In a recent “It’s a Good Life” podcast, REALStrengths expert Rachael Yeaman provided some powerful tips to help you beat burnout and leverage your unique strengths and abilities to live the good life. Here are some of the top takeaways:
Recognize burnout before you flame out
Some of the warning signs of burnout are fatigue, difficulty making decisions, increased cynicism and growing agitation. Other clues could be numbing out by constantly scrolling online or even avoiding interactions with other people. It’s vital to pay attention to these kinds of warning signs so that you can start to control your responses and adjust your course, instead of simply existing in a state where you’re just constantly reacting to life happening around you. The true cost of burnout is losing the power of choice. If you spend lengthy periods of time in deep stress, it creates very little space to truly live a life by design on your own terms, in the direction you intend to go.
Use your gifts and abilities to get fired up
Leveraging your innate gifts and abilities is a powerful way to combat burnout, as well as prevent it in the future. Knowing your strengths creates a deep self-belief and resilience that helps you to deal with any life situation. When you know what makes you uniquely great – whether it’s your tenacity, perseverance or creative problem solving – you can be super intelligent about how you respond to challenges and retain the power of intentional choice.
Use your strengths to be productive
Are you someone who starts off strong with a project but finds it difficult to finish? Or maybe you have a hard time getting going, but you love to come in and finalize details at the end? When you know what your particular strengths and abilities are, you can use them intentionally to set up your calendar, organize your day and prioritize your time with purpose. This means that the likelihood of burning out is greatly diminished. Buffini & Company’s free REALStrengths Assessment is a great place to start!
