Jim Rohn’s former agent Kyle Wilson is one of the best marketing consultants and promoters in the world. I recently interviewed Kyle about the powerful strategies he has used over many years to help the top speakers in the personal growth and development field to expand both their audience and their influence. Here are some of the takeaways:

For things to get better, you have to get better

At a difficult point in his career, Kyle blamed his lack of success on the world around him – the government, the economy and even current events. However, Jim Rohn taught him that everyone experiences these sorts of challenges – it’s how you deal with them that counts! Your path to success is determined by your personal growth. If you want things to improve, you must work on and improve yourself.

Success is predictable

No matter what people say, there is no shortcut to success. Kyle learned from Jim that true success is achieved when you think and act like a farmer. If you follow the age-old principles of the Law of the Harvest and sow things that compound over time, your success will be predictable. A bumper crop does not simply grow overnight. Likewise, there is no such thing as overnight success. Do the right things over time and you will succeed.

Bring value to the marketplace

When it comes to successful marketing and promotion, everything is about the value proposition. If you want to be successful, you must bring value to the marketplace. If you want to be wealthy, you must learn to be valuable to valuable people. If you can bring value to a relationship, and vice versa, then success will inevitably follow.

Know what your goals are

For marketing and promotion to be truly effective, your goals and your purpose must align. Some people make the fatal mistake, often through desperation, of going down a certain path to get a result instead of following a path that will take them where they actually want to go. Take time to reflect on and set your goals. Then, ask yourself a centering question: Three years from now, if you could be known as a world-class expert in something, what would you want it to be?

Marketing is not about being clever. It’s not about being manipulative. It’s about knowing what your purpose and goals are and then connecting the dots. To learn more, listen to the latest episode of “It’s a Good Life.”
