Ep #303: From Paycheck to Purpose – an Interview with Ken Coleman

Purpose written on wooden blocks

Many people feel frustrated and stuck at work, but they don’t know how to make a change or find their dream job. I recently interviewed author and broadcaster Ken Coleman about his new book, “From Paycheck to Purpose.”Ken shared how you can find a career you love, do work you were uniquely created for and discover your true purpose in life. Here are the 7 stages of finding your dream job:

Get Clear

The first step to getting your dream job is to uncover what you do best, what you love to do most, what results you want to produce and where you can combine these three factors to do work that really matters to you.

Get Qualified

Once you know what you want to do and where you can perform that role, you need to get qualified. This process doesn’t have to be difficult or expensive. From online courses, to weekend classes, to opportunities to shadow someone in your chosen field, there are plenty of ways to get the experience and qualifications you need.

Get Connected

To do what you want to do, you need to be around people who are doing it and in places where it’s happening. This means seeking out people and experiences that put you in close proximity to your dream job. Take someone out to lunch or even to have a quick coffee – you’ll discover that people are often very happy to help and give advice!

Get Started

When you start to make the right connections, opportunities will come your way. The role you land straight off the bat might not be your dream job, but it should be a stepping-stone in the right direction. You could even start a side hustle!

Get Promoted

As you get closer to what you really want, you should maximize your current role by always going above and beyond. This way, you’ll get noticed by leaders, peers and customers.

Get Your Dream Job

As you keep rising in rank, you’ll eventually land your dream role! But that doesn’t mean you should stop growing. You need to always keep learning and developing by continuing to increase your knowledge and sharpen your skills.

Give Yourself Away

When you have your dream job, it’s time to help others, just as someone once helped you. Reach out and give advice, connect people with opportunities or share your knowledge. Giving back and becoming a mentor is a powerful way to help those who are coming up behind you land their dream job.
