Emotional maturity is one of the most important attributes for success. If you can manage your emotions and take full responsibility for your actions, you’ll become a truly effective leader in your work, your family and your community. Here’s how you can develop emotional maturity today:

Signs of emotional immaturity:

  • You blame other people

Paulo Coelho once said, “You can spend your entire life blaming the world, but your successes or failures are entirely your own.” You will never grow in the area that you’re trying to if you always blame other people for your failings – you need to take personal responsibility.

  • You can’t accept criticism

Being open to accepting feedback is key to emotional maturity. No-one likes to hear that they might have a weakness, of course, but taking criticism on board when it’s fair and warranted is vital to growth. If you’re a growth person, you have to be open to hearing what your blind spots are and not be insecure about it.

  • You’re stagnant

Stagnation comes from not growing emotionally. As Lou Holtz once said, “In this world, you’re either growing or you’re dying, so get in motion and grow.” You need to have a growth mindset if you want to mature.

Tips to mature emotionally:

  • Take control

To ensure that you don’t react in an immature way to a difficult situation, you need to prepare

yourself ahead of time. What will it take to hold your tongue and withhold your actions?

Reflecting on possible scenarios or circumstances and thinking ahead about how you can

handle them is a powerful way to take control. Remember – you’re in charge of your own life,

so if you don’t like where you’re headed, then take the reins and change direction!

  • Commit to CANI

A focus on personal growth and development is vital to success. You’ve got to work for

yourself by working on yourself, so CANI – constant and never-ending improvement – is

essential. Always keep maturing, growing and developing.  No matter what your age, you can

always improve.

  • Become a Master

When you’re dedicated to personal growth and development, you become a master of your

own emotions. As well as knowing when you’re on track to success, you also quickly get to

know when you might be headed in the wrong direction. Always aim to grow yourself

with intention first and foremost, then you can help other people to grow too!

Emotional maturity doesn’t just come with age – you have to work at it.To learn more, listen to the latest episode of “It’s a Good Life.”
