Feeling stuck is part and parcel of being human. In a recent episode of “It’s a Good Life” bestselling author Adam Alter shared why everyone feels stuck sometimes, how it can be a feature of progress and what to do to get unstuck and thrive.
Getting stuck is inevitable
When we feel stuck in life, it can seem as if no-one else is going through what we are. The fact is, people don’t generally share their struggles and challenges, which means that on social media especially we see nothing but success. However, everyone gets stuck at some point – it’s inevitable! Firstly, successful techniques tend to work less effectively over time, whether that’s working out in the gym or building a business. Secondly, situations and environments shift, and we can get stuck because we’re blindsided by those changes.
Being stuck is a feature of progress
Most of us believe that if you work hard, apply yourself and acquire the right skills, you’ll be on the fast track to your desired destination. That’s why when you stall or hit a plateau on your journey to a goal, it feels like a glitch. You have to remember, however, that all stories of success story involve multiple and repeated periods of being stuck. This can feel isolating and lonely but, if you recognize that it’s inevitable, you’ll be prepared, you’ll have a strategy to deal with it and you’ll be much more successful in the long run.
Perfection is unattainable
Striving for perfection is self-defeating. No-one is perfect after all! Instead of perfection, focus on excellence, mastery or improvement. This mindset shift gives you the freedom to define what excellence means to you today and then allows that definition to shift and change over time. For example, if you’ve just started to play chess, your definition of excellence right now will be very different from what it will be 10 years down the line. Remember – perfection is unattainable, but excellence can be redefined across time.
