In today’s uncertain world, it can be really challenging to stay positive. We’re all exposed to commentary 24 hours a day, much of it negative, and it can sometimes feel like there’s no escape. The good news is, however, that it is possible to stay upbeat, even in tough times.

When I was a kid, my mother always listened to the old Bing Crosby and Andrews Sisters hit, “Accentuate the Positive.” This song was all about staying positive and forward-thinking in challenging circumstances. Inspired by this tune, here are some strategies you can use today to combat fear and negativity and embrace a positive mindset:

Eliminate the Negative

• Go on a News Fast

Set boundaries when it comes to the news you consume. Instead of constantly refreshing your mobile device or listening to media updates all day, make a concerted effort to avoid, or at the very least reduce, your news consumption. It will instantly lift your mood.

• Delete the Apps

We can all be guilty of wasting time online. When you find yourself scrolling mindlessly, consider if what you’re doing right now is getting you where you want to go, or just getting you worked up.

It’s easy to create dissent, but it can be very difficult to create peace. To avoid unnecessary conflict, we must allow for diversity of thought and fight our own need to be right. As author and former FBI negotiator Chris Voss advises, learn to disagree without being disagreeable.

Accentuate the Positive

• Get Back To Reading

My mentor Jim Rohn used to say, “Miss a meal if you have to, but don’t miss a book.” If you want to stay upbeat, ignore the negative news cycles and get back to reading educational and uplifting content to feed your mind. You are what you read!

• Listen To Nonmanipulative Input

Be selective with your input and choose what you listen to with care. Seek out unbiased sources that give facts and figures you can rely on, like It’s a Good Life.

• Remember Perfect Love Casts Out Fear

When we constantly expose ourselves to the negative, we can get locked in a cycle of fear, which can lead to high levels of anxiety and feelings of despair and depression. The opposite of fear is love – that’s what we must deliberately focus on instead.

Mind Your Business

• Don’t Focus on Politics

Guard against getting caught up in the drama of politics to the detriment of everything else. As philosopher Marcus Aurelius once said, “You have power over your mind, not outside events. Realize this and you will find strength.”

• Focus on the Five Circles

There are five essential circles in life: spiritual, family, business, financial and personal. Instead of concentrating on negative news, focus on how you can improve the health of each of your circles. Buffini & Company’s 5 Circle Fit Challenge is a great place to start!

Pick the Area in Most Need of Help

All of the five circles are interconnected, which means that each one affects the others. Put your energy into the one that needs most help right now – doing this will have a positive impact on every other circle.

In today’s world, it’s more important than ever to try to be positive and optimistic. Focus on being the best and having the best life that you can and then be a shining example of that.To learn more, listen to the latest episode of “It’s a Good Life”.
