What do you want to achieve before you die? I recently interviewed bestselling author and internationally renowned motivational speaker Ben Nemtin about creating the world’s greatest bucket list. Ben, star of MTV’s The Buried Life and co-founder of The Buried Life movement, shared how after he struggled with depression growing up and was forced to drop out of college, he created a monumental bucket list with his three childhood friends. As they searched for more purpose in life, they managed to achieve the unthinkable. Even better, every time they accomplished a dream, they helped a complete stranger to cross something off their list too. Here are some of the major takeaways from the interview:
A bucket list is a really powerful way to help you realize your dreams
Your bucket list is a holistic reflection of all the things that will bring you joy, happiness and a sense of purpose and well-being. It’s a powerful device you can use to bring you back to your true self when everything else in life pulls you away from that. If we don’t have reminders and ways to connect us to those things that will truly bring us joy, they will get buried.
Dream big!
Ben and his friends had many items on their bucket list that they thought they would never achieve. But with dogged determination, perseverance and the help of other people, many of their wildest bucket list items came true. From playing basketball with President Obama to helping a young girl get a bionic hand, they made the impossible possible.
Share your bucket list
One of the biggest stumbling blocks people experience when it comes to achieving their personal goals is not sharing them, either because they’re afraid of what other people will think or they’re afraid of failure. If you don’t share your dreams you’ll be on your own, doing it solo. By sharing, you give other people the opportunity to help you. Ben and his friends always found that people were more than willing to help, just as they delighted in helping others too. The truth is, if you give someone a chance to be a hero, they will take it! The other positive to sharing your bucket list is that you build accountability, which is vital so that you don’t make excuses to put off doing until tomorrow what you could do today.
