Promotion is often misunderstood but, when it’s done authentically and with passion, it’s really all about giving people a solution to their problems. I recently interviewed consultant and promoter Bill Hampton to discover how organizations can move the needle when it comes to promotion, sales and growth.  Here are some of the top takeaways:

Know Your Audience

When it comes to promotion, the first thing you need to do is know your audience. In politics there’s a saying, “All politics is local.” This means that, in order to succeed in the political field, you have to know your constituents’ frustrations and needs. It’s the same with business. What are the problems that your customers need solved? Ultimately, you’re not really promoting your business, you’re promoting the problem that you solve. You have to know your audience so that you can answer the right questions.

Build Trust, Confidence and Competence

The next step is to build trust, confidence and competence. Your customers need to trust you, they need to have confidence in you and they need to be assured that you can solve their problems and do what actually needs to be done when it’s required.  

Promote with Passion

Don’t be shy! Get out there and consistently sell the message every day that you can do what you say you can. Then, when people give you the opportunity to prove that, you’ve got to be ready and you have to deliver. As John Wooden says, “When opportunity knocks, it’s too late to prepare.”

Sales Needs Belief

Sales starts with belief – belief in yourself and belief in your product. Know your why, know your numbers and then go all in. When you do that, you’re able to gain unstoppable momentum and push the rock over the hill.

Grow Yourself First

Everything starts with self-growth. Read voraciously, listen to educational and informative resources and never put a lid on your growth. You can only grow your people and your business in direct proportion to growing yourself. If you don’t grow, you’re not growing your people. And if you’re not growing your people, you’re definitely not growing your business.


If you want your business to flourish, you need to put some systems and processes in place. If you don’t know what you’re building towards, you’re not going to get there, so know what you’re building.

Promotion is one of the most misunderstood aspects of business today. It’s often connected to showmanship or clever marketing, but it’s really all about a passion to provide solutions to people’s problems in a real and authentic way.
