In life, the choices you make determine everything about you. I recently had the privilege of interviewing Dr. Nido Qubein, President of High Point University, about the life choices that have fueled his phenomenal success and his passion for helping others. During our chat, Nido reflected on his remarkable journey from penniless immigrant to renowned entrepreneur and educator. He also advised how to help young people achieve in today’s world and provided words of encouragement for those struggling during this challenging year. Here are some more of the major takeaways:
Choose To Transform
Your circumstances do not define where you end up, your choices do. Never settle or assume that you know everything in life. Keep working to change and to transform. Today’s world is moving at such a fast pace that, if you don’t evolve, you will be left behind. How you change is how you will succeed.
Give Back
We all have a responsibility, even a blessing, to help other people. When you’re successful, you’re much more capable of doing just that. You can be a model and a mentor. You can give back and you can work to build something of value. With a clear vision, a solid strategy, practical systems and consistent execution, you will succeed in your endeavors.
Focus Is More Important Than Intelligence
When it comes to success, intelligence alone is not enough. To truly succeed, you must focus on achievement and then really work for what you want. This requires discipline, but that is better than the pain of regret when you don’t try. Be prepared to take risks along the way. If you focus on success alone and you fear failure, you will never know the difference between productive failures and non-productive success.
Always Be Hungry To Learn and Grow
The pathway to understanding life is associating with people who are committed to growth and learning. Always strive to continuously improve in every aspect of your life and surround yourself with people from whom you can learn. Who you spend time with is who you become: When you associate with smart people who work hard and believe that they can surmount any challenge, this mindset becomes part and parcel of who you are. As Michelangelo said, Ancora Imparo – I am still learning.
