Henry Ford said, “Whether you think you can or whether you think you can’t, you’re right.” Your thoughts have power. If you have a positive mindset and seek out positivity, it’ll give you confidence in your abilities and knowledge. When you’re confident, anything can happen. The reverse is true, too. You can set the grandest goals and intentions, but if you’re afflicted with negativity and self-doubt, you won’t reach them. The good news is, there’s hope. I’ve said it many times: if you can change your thoughts, you can change your life. That’s right, success boils down to adopting the right mindset and philosophy.

Sounds easy, right? In theory, it is. However, many of us are resistant to change. We’re too busy or too distracted by technology to take the first step. We get sidetracked by the goofy thoughts that enter our minds each day; unfortunately, it’s these same goofy thoughts that shape our personal philosophies about what we think about ourselves. The key is to shut down these goofy thoughts before they can take root in our minds. When you catch yourself thinking them: 1. Let it go, 2. Replace it with a positive thought and 3. Whatever you do, don’t Tweet it out! Don’t let your worst moment define you in writing in perpetuity.

You always have a choice

What you think about yourself—deep to your core—determines your success. According to the author James Allen in the book, As a Man Thinketh, “A person is limited only by the thoughts he chooses.” You have a choice—you can choose to give in to your negative thoughts about your skills or your expertise or you can choose to reject those thoughts and reshape your narrative in a positive light. It’s up to you!

3 ways to develop a positive personal philosophy

  1. Watch your intake. We’re surrounded by information every day, mostly coming from the device you may be reading this blog on right now. Although we may not realize it at the time, we’re internalizing everything we read, watch and hear. Make sure the stuff you’re reading, watching and listening to is positive and inspires you to be even better. As you become more successful, share what you’re reading, watching and listening to with others to help them develop a more positive personal philosophy as well.
  2. Associate with the right people. My mother used to say, “Show me your friends and I’ll tell you who you are.” Our philosophy is also shaped by the people we spend the most time with. If you hang out with successful and positive people, you’ll think and achieve like them. Just as if you’re surrounded by negativity, you’ll likely become more negative, too. In the book Think and Grow Rich, Napoleon Hill outlines the mastermind principle; that is, two or more people meeting up and engaging to pursue a definite purpose. He notes that with a positive attitude, those people are unbeatable. Every year, we host MasterMind Summit® in San Diego to encourage our Members from all over North America to come together for three days of personal growth and development. Often, they bring their spouses, kids and other family and friends to share the experience with them! After three days, they’re in the right mindset to become an unbeatable force.

To maintain that feeling, tap into your coach, who will not only provide encouragement but also share their experiences and advice and help you build an unbeatable business.

  1. Lean into affirmations. Words have power, whether they’re said out loud or in your thoughts. The things we say to ourselves would be fighting words if we heard them said about a loved one or friend. If we heard someone call a loved one “an idiot” or “a failure,” we’d want to meet them outside, but we say those things to ourselves all the time and believe it. My mentor, Zig Ziglar, said: “Failure is an event, never a person.” It’s okay to be disappointed; it’s not okay to get discouraged and give up. It’s not okay to make a setback part of your personal philosophy and let it stop you from reaching your potential.

Replace negative thoughts with positive affirmations, such as “I did it before, I can do it again” or “I can, I will, I believe” will improve your mindset. An affirmation can be a phrase like those just mentioned, or a word or a favorite quote. Whatever yours is, write it down and post it where you can see it daily or make it your background on your phone. Read it and say it aloud every time you hear an annoying goofy negative thought.

If you want to succeed in life and your business, the first step is reshaping your thoughts. Think positive and enjoy the rewards of success.
