With so many distractions and demands to deal with, today’s world can often feel stressful and overwhelming. When life is overcomplicated, you feel swamped by your schedule, you struggle with the smallest decisions and you might even find yourself living contrary to your values. Luckily, the solution to this problem is hiding in plain sight: If you’re drowning in chaos, complication and complexity, you need to get back to basics and simplify. Here’s how:

Set goals

When your life is chaotic, your priorities are usually out of alignment, your time management is poor and you’re probably overcommitting and spreading yourself too thin. To rectify the situation, you need to decide what really matters to you. What are your true priorities and what are the daily, weekly and monthly tasks you can undertake to achieve them? It’s up to you to take control of your calendar and get solid routines in place. Remember – win the morning, win the day! When you make a concerted effort to streamline everything, you’ll become more efficient and gain more clarity.

Get your finances in order

When life is overly complicated, you can easily get into a dangerous cycle of overspending and poor financial habits. If you have no real idea where your money is going, you can drown in a spiral of debt really quickly. To get back on track, you need to set a budget – and stick to it! Don’t make unnecessary purchases, document all of your spending and start to pay down your debt, beginning with the highest-interest loans first. As Dave Ramsey says, “A budget is telling your money where to go instead of wondering where it went.”

Don’t sweat the small stuff

When you feel overwhelmed, it can be hard to see the wood for the trees. If you don’t have a solid plan in place, you can start to focus on unimportant and trivial matters, leading you to feel stuck and paralyzed by indecision. To achieve your goals, you have to remember to major in the majors! Get yourself a good coach to help keep you motivated and accountable and you’ll be on your way to mapping a critical path for success.

The philosopher Confucius once said, ‘Life is really simple, but we insist on making it complicated.’ Life doesn’t have to be so complicated! If you work to identify and prioritize what really matters to you, you’ll be able to reduce complexity, keep things simple and live the good life.
