Success in business is a journey. On the way, you must take the time to reflect on your path, immerse yourself in all the learning you can, carefully consider the opportunities in front of you and then build a plan. However, as you work through this process, you also need to guard against paralysis of analysis. If you want to achieve real success, you can’t just sit on the fence and endlessly contemplate your next move – you need the ability to act!
Winners are doers
Many entrepreneurs spend their time constantly strategizing, but never acting. They get so caught up in perfectionism and procrastination that they become almost paralyzed by indecision and they never make a move. This lack of action is often about a fear of failure – they don’t want to be judged by others or be seen to have made a mistake. It’s a vicious circle of overthinking that can halt progress and growth in its tracks.
The most important thing to remember when it comes to business success is that winners are doers. Not everything has to be perfect before you start. Sure, you might make some mistakes along the way, but you’ll learn from them!
There’s an old Irish proverb that says, “You’ll never plough a field by turning it over in your mind.” Many of us think we’ve done the work we need to do to achieve success because we’ve gone over and over it in our minds – we feel mentally drained and exhausted without ever having physically exerted ourselves or actually doing what we need to.
The truth is, business always rewards action. If you want to win, you have to go do, not just think! When it comes to tactics, your mantra should be aim, ready, fire – it’s wise to take that time to strategize. But, when it comes to action, your mantra should be fire, ready, aim. Make that all-important start and then focus on refining and getting better. As Zig Ziglar once said, “You don’t have to be great to start, but you do have to start to be great.” Taking real action will move you far closer to your goals than all of the endless strategizing ever will. If you want to succeed, you need to first make a start, then focus on improving and finally get great at doing!
The ability to act is one of the five crucial skills and abilities you need to achieve phenomenal success in business and in life. To learn more about the other four, listen to the latest episode of “It’s a Good Life” today.
