One of the keys to success in life is the ability to recover from adversity. Everyone makes mistakes and experiences difficulties, but if you develop the capacity to bounce back from tough times you’ll become stronger than ever. Here are the steps you need to take to build the emotional resilience to weather any storm:

Embrace Imperfection

In today’s social-media driven world, it’s very easy to believe that other people have perfect lives. We see showreels of fake perfection online and can feel unworthy in comparison. The truth is, perfection is a myth! No-one is perfect and constantly comparing yourself to others will drain you of valuable emotional reserves. To build emotional resilience, you need to embrace imperfection. What’s the worst that can happen if you make a mistake? As Albert Einstein once said, “A person who never made a mistake never tried anything new.”  Keep in mind that mistakes are just learning opportunities on your journey to success.

Use Your Unique Strengths and Abilities

Author Fannie Flagg once said, “Being a successful person is not necessarily defined by what you have achieved, but by what you have overcome.” When you encounter a setback, remind yourself that you did it before and you can do it again. Your unique strengths and abilities have equipped you to deal with whatever life throws at you. Ask yourself: How have you successfully dealt with challenges in the past? Make a list of your previous accomplishments and wins to reignite your confidence and self-esteem. And remember, you’re not in this alone so get support and encouragement from a coach, a mentor and your community.

Work Your Resilience Muscle

If you store up a reservoir of emotional energy, you can call on it when you need to. This way, you’ll be able to stay on task, keep optimistic and remain high functioning when you experience adversity. Maintaining this reservoir means consistently working your resilience muscle to keep it strong. When the worst happens, don’t dwell in discouragement. Instead, learn from your mistakes, approach things in a different way and try again! As Nelson Mandela once said, “Part of being optimistic is keeping one’s head pointed toward the sun, one’s feet moving forward.”

Everyone experiences adversity, but if you live your life consistent with your values and goals, you’ll build your emotional resilience and be able to bounce back better than ever! To learn more, listen to the latest episode of “It’s a Good Life.”
