Anxiety is something that can affect us all. In today’s increasingly anxious world, it can feel that everywhere you look you’re surrounded by a manifestation of fear that’s impossible to escape. But you can do something about it. You can change your habits and refuse to allow society to impose its anxiety on you. Here are some tips, based on my own personal experience, to reduce your anxiety, be encouraged and live the good life!

You’re Not Alone

Anxiety is often something that’s hidden and perceived as a weakness. But if you feel anxious, remember you’re not alone! In today’s world, negativity has almost become the norm. Anxiety has become the chief marketing officer for social media, the 24-hour news networks and even sports programs! To escape the cauldron of anxiety, become more outwardly focused. Serving and helping others is the key. No-one is blessed more than the person who gets to serve! After all, it’s impossible to shine the light on someone else’s path without lighting up your own. Reach out and become more involved in your community – not only will you help other people, you’ll be less anxious too.

The Dynamic of Control

Our need for control is ultimately what causes us the highest level of anxiety. When we feel out of control, we feel anxious. The irony is, however, that there are really only three things you can actually control: your attitude, your energy and your effort. If you let go of perfectionism and stop comparing yourself to others, your anxiety will reduce. As Wayne Dyer said, “You cannot always control what goes on on the outside, but you can control what goes on on the inside.”

Be Present

One of the reasons we struggle with anxiety is that we’re not very present in each and every day. We get stuck in the past and we get overwhelmed by the future. But people who can be present in the moment do the best in life. As the bible says, “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” Put another way, “Yesterday is history. Tomorrow’s a mystery. Today is a gift that’s why they call it the present.” Learn from the past and look to the future, but strive to be in the present and you will be less anxious.
