Be Like a Timex Part 2

The classic Timex was a hugely popular wristwatch because it took a licking but it kept on ticking! Life gives everyone a licking at some stage. Things aren’t always simple or easy, but, just like a Timex, we’ve got to keep on ticking, no matter what. Here’s how:

Just put one foot in front of the other

Life can be a tough road but, if you just keep putting one foot in front of the other, you’ll get to where you want to go. Focus on what’s ahead and keep moving forward step by step, no matter what.

Don’t give up

Setbacks are all part of the journey. A failure doesn’t have to be fatal – sometimes you have to go down to come back up! Stop, breathe, rest and recover and then keep on ticking like a Timex and don’t give up. As Winston Churchill famously said, “If you’re going through hell, keep going.”

Keep perspective

Thing aren’t always as bad as they feel. Our emotions are part of the essence of a good life, but that doesn’t mean that we should put all of our trust in them because they can come and go, just like the changing of the tides. If your feelings run your day, whether in your personal or your business life, get some empirical data or feedback to gain perspective. Reading old journals is a very powerful way to do this. What written goals have you achieved? How far have you already come? Sometimes you’re actually winning and you don’t even realize it.

Keep your eye on the prize

Paulo Coelho once said, “No one can hit their target with their eyes closed.” What are you striving for? When times get hard, remember to keep your eyes on the prize and focus on your ultimate goals.

Celebrate your wins

Sometimes we get so busy looking ahead to where we want to go that we forget to celebrate where we’ve already got to. To keep encouraged, it’s vital to celebrate your wins, no matter how small they might be. If you don’t, it robs your future of the fuel to achieve the next goal. It also robs your peace of mind because you can get consumed with ‘more’ and ‘next’ and forget to live in the precious present.

Don’t go it alone

As Scripture says, “Two are better than one because they have a good return for their labor. If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up.” There are always people who are willing to help, so never go it alone! The good life isn’t always easy or comfortable but, just like the classic Timex watch, we can keep on ticking if we maintain our sense of humor, our sense of gratitude and our sense of hope for the future.
