Be More Purposeful

Many people have no sense of purpose – they don’t know what they want from life or how to get it. Unfortunately, if you don’t know where you’re going, every road will take you there… but you will still be lost! The great news is that it is possible to get more meaning and fulfilment from your business and your life – you just have to figure out what you really want, prioritize your activities and then build habits that will help you become an on-purpose person. Here’s how:

Ask Yourself Some Questions

It can be difficult to carve out the space to think about what you want and where you’re going but, if you want to live a more purposeful life, you have to make time for contemplation. Ask yourself:

  • What is it I enjoy doing?
  • Why do I enjoy doing it?
  • What would I do if I knew I couldn’t fail?
  • What would I do if I didn’t need the money?

When you can answer these questions, you can start to focus and concentrate your energy and attention in the right area. Remember – what you’re doing today should be a stepping stone to get you to where you really want to be, so take the time to stand back and assess if you’re heading in the right direction!

Be Consistent

The number one reason people fail is because they are inconsistent. Even with the very best of intentions, it can be easy to lose direction and focus in our efforts to improve. That’s why we all need help to reach our goals, be it in our health and fitness, our personal lives or our business. For example, my personal trainer recently moved state and, after a year of training consistently, without his help I quickly floundered. I knew I had to get back on track so I signed up with a new trainer and started over. Leaning into your coach is the best way to ensure you stay consistent in your habits.  

Prioritize the Principle of WIN

In today’s hectic and fast-paced world, everything can feel urgent. It’s as if we’re living in a blender – the speed of every day is so fierce that we can get overwhelmed and, instead of prioritizing what’s important and making progress, we just react to the urgent. We become like mice on a wheel with no idea where true north is. When everything seems too much to deal with, use Lou Holtz’s principle of WIN – What’s Important Now. If you continually ask yourself ‘what’s important now?’ instead of ‘what do I have to do next?’ you won’t waste time on the trivial.

Write Out Your Definite Major Purpose

Getting your thoughts down on paper really helps you to understand yourself more and get to the essence of who you are as a person. Write yourself clear! Think about work you’ve done in the past when you experienced a tuning-fork moment and felt a sense of confidence or skill. Reflect on the words and thoughts that have been consistent throughout your life. For example, I have always been drawn to the idea of impacting and improving the lives of others. A purpose statement can take years to refine but, when done right, it gets shorter, clearer and more concise. It also becomes more powerful. As Napoleon Hill said, “What a different story people would have to tell if only they would adopt a definite purpose and stand by that purpose until it had time to become an all-consuming obsession.”

Commit to the Next 30 Days

Your purpose won’t show up one day, it shows up day by day. For the next 30 days, wake up and ask yourself:  What’s my definite major purpose? What is it I’ve enjoyed doing in my life? What is very natural for me to do? Where do my gifts lie? Where do I have confidence? What’s important now? What are the priorities?

You can live a more purposeful life. You can have a more purposeful career. You can leave this world a little better than you found it. Have a definite, major purpose. Make up your mind and go after it with all gusto. That’s how to be a more purposeful person.
