Beating Procrastination

A man writing on glass

Procrastination is something that’s often misunderstood. The basic definition is ‘To be slow or late about doing something that should be done.’ But procrastination isn’t just about laziness or poor time-management, it’s far more complex! Procrastination expert Dr. Joseph Ferrari says, ‘Procrastination is not waiting and it is more than delaying. It is a decision to not act.’ There can be many psychological and emotional factors behind this type of behavior, but the fact is when you procrastinate you ultimately hold yourself back from success. If you can beat this self-defeating pattern, you’ll surpass your goals and achieve more than you ever dreamed of. Here’s how:

Develop a growth mindset

Research has shown that more than 30% of adults consider themselves to be chronic procrastinators, and this behaviour is twice as prevalent in the self-employed. One way to break the procrastination trap is to work on developing a growth mindset. What do you read, watch and listen to? Are you filling your mind with positive content that will help you to grow and develop? Remember, you don’t need to be perfect, you just need to focus on consistently improving. As Jim Rohn said, ‘Work harder on yourself than you do on your job. If you work hard on your job, you can make a living. If you work hard on yourself, you can make a fortune.’

Make it automatic

Og Mandino once said, ‘Good habits are the key to all success. Bad habits are the unlocked door to failure.’ Procrastinators lack solid daily habits and routines, which are the secret elixir of the most successful people in the world. What does your day-to-day routine currently look like? Where can you create structure, consistency and clear goals? Whether it’s a morning ritual that sets you up for the day or a commitment to write a certain number of personal notes to customers every afternoon, locking in successful daily habits means you’ll change your life. Concentrate on doing the good stuff until it’s on autopilot and you’ll always win.

Do It N.O.W.

No one is guaranteed tomorrow. It’s easy to put good intentions on the long finger, thinking you’ll do it ‘next time.’ Unfortunately, sometimes time simply runs out. That’s why you should start today: build a strong business that lasts while also making the most of the time spent with the ones you love – that’s called living the good life! Buffini & Company’s Do It N.O.W. campaign has been specifically designed to help you do just that! Why not have a free consultation today and find out more?
