From surviving the hardship of communist Hungary to becoming the living embodiment of the American Dream, OPI cofounder Suzi Weiss-Fischmann is an extraordinary powerhouse in the beauty industry. In her new book, “I’m Not Really a Waitress,” – Brian’s favorite book of 2019 – she outlines some of the business principles that have made her The First Lady of Nails.

A business without a vision isn’t a business, it’s a pastime

If you want to achieve grand success, you must have long-term vision. There will always be zigs and zags in the road, but continue on your path regardless of the challenges and setbacks you encounter. Always believe in yourself and your vision.

If you want to succeed, you must have patience

There is no such thing as an overnight success. Be patient. Remember: if you have a dream and you pursue it no matter what, you can achieve it.

Relationships are extremely important

Good relationships are at the heart of every good business. The best thing you can do for your business is to build strong relationships with your customers and those in your circles of contact and influence.

Make it personal

Many consumers today want to be part of your brand and feel personally connected to your business. In this hectic and fast-paced world, social media is one powerful way to communicate with your customers on a global scale, while also connecting with them in a personal way.

Mistakes happen

If you feel good about something, go for it and believe in yourself. However, mistakes do happen and you have to move on. When you make a bad decision, shake it off and challenge yourself to do better. Life is about experiences – you learn from every one of them, good and bad.

Don’t forget where you came from

Being grateful is vital to success. Reflect on how far you’ve already come and strive to stay as passionate as when you first started. No matter the success you achieve, you can always keep learning and growing. What can you do better today than you did yesterday?

You’re only as good as the people who work for you

Not everyone can do things like you can…and maybe that’s a good thing! Trust your team and those who work with you. If you delegate and give authority to people, they can often do things better than you.
