Although many people aspire to become successful, many fail to achieve it for one reason: their mindset. Napoleon Hill said, “whatever the mind can conceive and believe, it can achieve.” Therefore, if you want to achieve success, you have to develop the right mindset first.
1. What is your purpose? A purpose gives you a reason to work hard to reach your goals and achieve success. When you feel your motivation beginning to wane, a purpose inspires you to keep on the path to success.
If you’re not sure what your purpose is, don’t worry. It often lies in your current interests and strengths. For example, if you get a surge of energy helping your clients buy a home, your purpose may be to help people. If you’re still not sure, ask people you trust—family, friends, your mentor, etc.—what they feel your strengths are and have them help you tease it out. Once you’ve narrowed down your strengths, define your purpose and commit to fulfilling it daily.
2. Improve your skills and capabilities. Commit to learning and growth and always seek out ways to sharpen your skills, expand your knowledge and improve your experience. Doing so will not only help you serve your clients better, it’ll also help you fulfill your purpose. And, perhaps most importantly, it’ll help you differentiate yourself in your market.
As Pete Leddy, renowned expert of human behavior and Vice President of People and Culture at NuVasive, explained in episode #108 of It’s a Good Life, in order to differentiate yourself from your competition, it’s important to think of yourself as a product with features and capabilities. Once you understand the needs of your market, use your ‘product’ to help you stand out.
Execute your purpose. Once you know your purpose and have built your ‘product,’ it’s time to make a plan and begin to fulfill your purpose. According to Pete Leddy, “If you have dreams, a purpose you want to fulfill, but you don’t have a plan, you’re a dreamer. If you’re out there day-to-day, hunkering down and getting projects done without a vision or purpose, you’re rudderless.” By fulfilling your purpose, you’re bound to succeed.
Whether you’re just starting out in your career or you’ve hit a rut, Pete Leddy has some great advice for you. Listen to episode #108 of It’s a Good Life for more timely advice to help you thrive in your career. Click here to listen.
