We all want to live with purpose; however, how many of us know what our purpose is? W. Clement Stone said, “Definiteness of purpose is the starting point of all achievement.” People go through their entire lives seeking their “why?”; that is, their reason for doing what they do.
According to Ken Coleman, best-selling author and host of the EntreLeadership podcast and The Ken Coleman Show on SiriusXM, “Everyone has a purpose. Every person was created to fulfill a unique role.” He suggests we all have a purpose statement, whether it’s for us personally or for our businesses. Our purpose is the combination of our talents or natural gifts and our passions. Our skills stem from our talents. For example, if you’re naturally empathetic, a skill you may work on honing is listening.
Passion is, put simply, what makes your heart come alive. When you think about the things you enjoy doing, what gives you a surge of energy and excitement?
If you’re not sure what your purpose is, use these three questions to guide you:
- Who do you want to help?
- What problem do you want to solve?
- What solution are you excited about?
Once you’ve answered these questions, create a purpose statement. There’s no need to make it complicated. The simpler and more streamlined you make your purpose statement, the clearer your purpose will be. Then, review it daily and refine it for improved clarity.
