After a year of self-isolation and social distancing, we might believe we’re fine to go it alone, but that’s far from the truth. People are designed to be in relationship, fellowship and connection with one another – we’re always better together than we are apart.

Why We Go It Alone

Self-reliance: Often, we tend to want to be independent and rely on ourselves, not others. The problem with self-reliance is that it always runs out of runway eventually. Confidence in your own abilities is a good thing, but as Oscar Wilde once said, “Overconfidence always sinks the ship.”

Pride: There are no extra prizes for going it alone and being able to say that you did everything all by yourself. If you’re too proud to ask for help, the only one who loses out is you. Pride will cost you everything, but leave you with nothing.

Embarrassment: It canfeelhumiliating to ask for help but the truth is, just like the golfer who can’t see his or her own swing, you can never see your own shortcomings. There’s no shame in asking for help so that you can improve, in business and in life.

Why It’s Hard to Ask For Help

You See it as a Sign of Weakness:

People perceive asking for help as being weak. But it’s the opposite – asking for help actually means that you want to learn! We are always at our best when we’re growing and learning.

You Don’t Value Yourself Enough:

Brian Tracy says, “Fear and self-doubt have always been the greatest enemy of human potential.” If you don’t value yourself as you should, you believe you don’t have what it takes to succeed. If you value and take care of yourself more, however, you’ll have more capacity to help and serve others.

You Fear Failing, Even With Help:

What if you ask for help and you still fail? Sometimes, you have to put yourself in a spot where there are no more excuses and it’s just you. As President Theodore Roosevelt once said, “It is hard to fail. But it is worse never to have tried to succeed.”

The Payoff When You Get Help

Your Problems Are Cut in Half, and Your Joys are Multiplied:

As the old proverb says, “Shared joy is a double joy, shared sorrow is half a sorrow.” When you let others into your life, everything improves. You have a community of people you can lean on and engage with, from personal relationships and friendships to a professional coach who can help you with your business.

You Benefit From the Power of the Mastermind:

The power of the mastermind originated in Napoleon Hill’s book, “Think and Grow Rich.” The mastermind principle is when two or more people, actively engaged in the pursuit of a definite purpose with a positive mental attitude, constitute an unbeatable force. In short, none of us are as smart as all of us – human beings do better together.

You Get to Pass it on:

When you go through a process of coaching, training and connecting with other people, you will learn so much that you can then become a mentor and influencer to someone else who might be trying to go it alone.

Everyone needs help, so don’t go it alone! To learn more, listen to the latest episode of “It’s a Good Life.”
