Accountability. What does that even mean? Well, Merriam-Webster defines it as: an obligation or willingness to accept responsibility or to account for one’s actions. Having worked for Buffini & Company for over 11 years, I have seen this noun play out in many ways. In this post, I wanted to give you some ideas for bringing this powerful and action-creating word to your Groups.
Types of Accountability
Group Accountability
When you go with group accountability; you are in charge of the whole process. Each member let’s you know what they want to be held to; you keep track and check in with them throughout the month. Here are couple ideas for checking in over the month:
A simple weekly phone call, “Just wanted to check in and see how you’re doing with ______.”
Send a quick email at the end of each week along the same lines, but add an inspiring quote to help keep them motivated.
Accountability Partner
This is a great way to build new relationships in your Group and deliver accountability at the same time. Have each Member of the Group put a business card in a bowl and then randomly draw partners. Repeat this process each month, so the partnerships change. Each partnership is responsible for coming up with how they will check in with each other. Be sure they set this up ahead of time. As Joe Niego says, “Conflict arises, when expectations differ.”
Like Minded Goals
Have each Group Member share what they want to be held accountable to for the month. Identify smaller group within your Group that share a goal. i.e. 3 people want to complete a certain number of pop-bys or 4 people want to work on a health goal. Group these people together for the month so they can check in and support each other in their common pursuit. It makes it easier to push through and get things done if you are in contact with someone else who is on the same path.
Regardless of which one you choose you should have each Member give a quick Success Report based on the accomplishments that came from the previous months accountability……..because who doesn’t love to celebrate success?!?
Sharing the Good Life!
