What does it take to be a good leader? One of the main requirements is the ability to keep learning and growing, just like legendary hitmaker Berry Gordy of Motown fame. Throughout his career, Berry led his talented Hitsville artists to incredible success all over the world. Here’s how you can follow in his Motown footsteps and lead yourself, your family, your team and your customers to phenomenal success in business and life.
M is for Me. Before you can take care of others, you have to take care of yourself. Make the time to check in with yourself regularly. How are you doing mentally, emotionally, physically and spiritually? The biggest challenge for a leader can be burnout, so always remember that you’ve got to be a great me before we can be a great we.
O is for Others. With so much demand on your time and energy, you must be crystal clear about the others in your life that you want to pour yourself into. You need to take care of your family, your team and your customers in that order.
T is for Talent. As a leader, you’re always looking for great talent for your team. When you find it, make sure you let it shine! Also bear in mind that you have to take charge of, develop and lead your own talents so that you can be a positive example for other people.
O is for Ownership. As a leader, your mindset has to be that you’re responsible for all things. Instead of blaming others when things go wrong, look to yourself first. Did you communicate clearly? Did you spend enough time? Did you train adequately? When you take ownership of the goals, mission and core values of your business, then your team will take ownership too.
W is for Winning. If you want to win, you must focus on serving your customers at the highest levels so that they can win first. When it comes to your team members, celebrate their wins with them, work together to win as a team and help them to win in their career. Remember – helping others to win means that you win too!
N is for Not Alone. Sometimes leadership can feel lonely, but it doesn’t have to be that way.
