“Cool Hand Luke” has been one of Brian’s favorite movies since he was a child. The story of a gutsy convict who refuses to submit to the system or play by prison rules, the movie is considered a classic in film history. At Peak Experience, Brian shared some of the powerful lessons that the movie has taught him about living the good life and explained how to apply these lessons to achieve success. Here are some of the top takeaways:
Luke was relentless
No matter the difficult circumstances he faced, Luke was relentless in his mindset and attitude – he never gave in. Likewise, we need to be relentless in our pursuit of the life that we desire. We all face challenges and issues that can slow our progress or impact our freedom, just like Luke had to deal with the hardship of imprisonment. However, if we’re doggedly relentless in our approach to success and don’t give up, the good life will be ours.
Luke was nonconformist
Luke never conformed to what others expected of him. A uniquely individual spirit, he went his own way and made his own decisions, always refusing to submit to the norm. In today’s world, conforming to what everyone else thinks or does won’t lead to the good life. If we conform, not only can we lose, but we can also lose respect for and trust in ourselves. To truly succeed, it’s vital to think outside of the box.
Luke was goal oriented
When Luke had a goal to achieve, such as the seemingly impossible task of eating 50 eggs in an hour, he employed laser focus to get the job done. Zoning out the sceptics, he simply zeroed in on his goal and successfully completed it. In your daily life, strive to apply the same kind of determination to what you want to achieve. Set goals that scare you, or that you think are out of reach, and then go for it! There will always be people who say it can’t be done – but there’s great fun in proving them wrong!
Luke was resilient
In the movie, Luke bounced back from almost every adversity – from working shackled on the chain gang in searing temperatures to enduring solitary confinement, he had a never-say-die attitude that was infectious. This type of strength and resilience is a trait that’s invaluable when it comes to achieving your goals and living the good life. It’s not how often you fall, but how often you rise again that counts.
Luke was charismatic
Whether he was bluffing his way through a poker game with a ‘hand of nothing’ or fighting someone a lot bigger and stronger than him, Luke’s charisma always shone through, making him a role model and a source of inspiration for his fellow prisoners. As a leader, your charisma can fuel others and be a powerful way to connect and build relationships.
