Did you know you can give your way to greatness? It’s true! As the old saying goes, when you give in slices, it comes back in loaves. If you give, you receive in abundance.
The first step is to give people the gift of your undivided attention. In today’s age of relentless technology, distractions are everywhere. People crave true connection more than ever so pay attention with your eyes, ears, and body language. Listen more than you talk – the person who listens learns far more than the person who doesn’t so be dialed into the needs of others, engage enthusiastically with them, and be intentional about it.
Secondly, give the benefit of the doubt. These days, people are very quick to jump to conclusions and judge. In the real estate business in particular, there can be a lot of conflict. Dealing with people, money, and emotion can be the recipe for drama. But if you can give someone the benefit of the doubt, you can defuse any challenges before they derail a transaction or even destroy a relationship. Extend grace to someone who is having a bad day, who dropped the ball, or who made a mistake. We’re all only human after all! Of course, if you see a pattern developing in someone’s behavior, you must pay heed but don’t be so quick to judge; give people a chance. Giving the benefit of the doubt does require maturity, but it also lays the foundation for longer, stronger, and healthier relationships.
Next, give respect. Great salespeople, leaders, and influencers all do a phenomenal job of giving respect to others. Remember – the world does not revolve around you! When you show respect, love often follows. Respect doesn’t come in a package; it is shown in behavioral interactions so you must be intentional in how you treat people. Showing respect means being hospitable and when you have a business that’s hospitable to people, you’ll provide great service and reap the rewards as a result.
Finally, give thanks. The one common thread amongst successful people is gratitude. When someone is thankful, they’re appreciative and they give. It’s impossible to feel grateful and entitled at the same time. Being thankful truly is an attitude of the heart. It’s a gift you can give to others and, more importantly, it’s the one gift you can also give to yourself.
