Over the past 12 months, the global pandemic has continued to present ongoing challenges.  As a result, many people drifted off-course or simply became a little too comfortable. The new year is the ideal time to reassess where you’re at and form the kinds of good habits that will set you on your way to having a good year and living the good life. Here’s how:

Get Out of Your Comfort Zone

Last year, many of us developed extra-comforting habits, such as staying home more or indulging in comfort foods. This was only natural – after all, we all want ease and relaxation when we’re stressed. However, the truth is there might have been a little too much comfort in our comfort zone! A good life is not a life of total comfort. We actually really develop and stretch when we’re under pressure – so now’s the time to get out of your comfort zone and grow.

Steer Your Life

George Bernard Shaw once said, “To be in hell is to drift; to be in heaven is to steer.” Drifting doesn’t sound all that damaging but, if you drift at sea, you die. If you want the next 12 months to be better than the last, you’ve got to steer the year and that means steering your own habits and patterns. Take the time to reflect on the five circles of your life: spiritual, family, business, financial and personal. Where have you got to in the last 12 months? What good habits have you formed? What good habits have you drifted away from? If you find it difficult to self-assess, get input from people you trust and respect – and be open to the feedback!

Write Some Goals

When you write down a goal, as opposed to simply having a goal in mind, it is seven times more likely to happen. To get the ball rolling and get back on track, start by writing some 10-day goals. Pick one circle that you’d like to improve and resolve to make some small changes there. Maybe you feel you’re at a five in your financial life, for example, and you’d like to improve to a six. 10-day goals are a great way to get started and give you some momentum. Once you have the wind at your back, you can look to the future and write some 10-month goals to keep you moving forward.

Now is the perfect time to refocus on your goals and re-establish your good habits, not only for a good year, but for a good life. To learn more, listen to the first episode of “It’s a Good Life.”
