Money is good and you should have more of it, but not for the reasons you might think. I recently spoke to finance expert Derrick Kinney to learn why lots of money won’t make you happy, unless you add meaning to it. Here are some of the major takeaways:
Recognize that money is good
People often have a misconception that making lots of money is somehow wrong, but this is far from the truth! You can do a lot of good with money, not only to improve your own family but to improve the world around you too. When you support the wider community with your money, you add huge value and meaning to people’s lives. That’s something you can’t put a price tag on.
Grow your business with a generosity purpose
In a crowded marketplace, potential customers can sometimes find it difficult to differentiate between you and similar offerings. A generosity purpose is a great way for you to help a cause you feel passionate about while also standing out from the crowd. Finding a cause that you love to champion, such as education or the environment, and then connecting it to your business means that not only do you get to do good, you also get to demonstrate to likeminded clients that you have similar values and principles and you’re the person to do business with.
Evaluate your impact
Successful people regularly pause to evaluate and then press the reset button. Why do you work? What impact are you having on the world? Is your life going in the direction you want it to? If you had a blank canvas in front of you right now, how would you paint your next chapter? When you ask these questions of yourself, you will clarify the meaning and purpose you want to attach to your money and it will drive you in ways you never thought possible. It will also automatically psychologically dismiss any inkling that money is bad, because now you know it can be used for really good things.
When you connect your money to a cause or a movement that you feel strongly about, you’ll make more and create a life full of meaning and purpose too. To learn more about the good money revolution, listen to the latest episode of “It’s a Good Life”.
