How to Get Involved with Your Community This Summer

Running out of things to do with your kids this summer? Consider turning to your community for inspiration! Whether you take the family to volunteer or participate in a neighborhood picnic, there are plenty of ways to get to know your neighbors while having fun in the sun.

Try these community activities and volunteer opportunities with your family!

Volunteer at the Community Garden — Does your city have a community garden? If so, stop by and see how you and your family can contribute! Many of these setups rely heavily on volunteers to tend to the plants. This is a great weekend activity to give your kids a chance to get their hands dirty for a great cause!

Attend a Local Picnic – Many of these events are also fundraisers for prominent organizations in your city or town. Check on social media to see if anything fun is coming up! These events usually include games for the kids, raffle prizes and delicious food. Plus, the proceeds often go back to the town you’re in, so it’s a win-win!

Participate in a Citywide Clean Up – In most cities, local environmental organizations will host park or beach clean-ups, in which residents come together to pick up trash and beautify an area. This is a great way to get your kids up and moving while taking care of the planet they love.

Host a Neighborhood Yard Sale — Consider hosting or participating in a neighborhood yard sale! Use the summer days to clean out the garage and collect items you’d like to sell. Invite your neighbors to do the same, then turn it into an event for the whole block. Patrons can park at the end of the street and peruse each home’s wares like they would a flea market. This is a great way to get rid of some stuff you no longer need while getting to know your neighbors.

For more volunteer opportunities and local events in your area, hop on Facebook or Instagram. You might also want to visit your city’s website to see what events they’re promoting, or even check in with your church. These are all excellent sources of information as you look for ways to get your family involved with the community this summer!
