Revisiting the Blessing of Work

Featured Image

In today’s world, many people are checked out of the workforce, even though businesses everywhere are looking for help. In his book, “Men Without Work,” economist Nicholas Eberstadt explored why it is that millions of Americans are currently neither working nor searching for work. His research found that this so-called ‘flight from work’ not only harms the economy, but impacts society and culture too. After all, work isn’t just something you do to pay the bills – it’s a service to others that helps to complete you and forms a vital part of your connection to the wider world, civil society and family.

Here are Brian’s top tips to get the most out of work and go live the good life:

Consider work a blessing

Many people view work as a rat race that they can’t escape from. Often, this comes down to poor economic choices and a lack of self-control. If you’re constantly seeking instant gratification, you’re going to fall into debt and become trapped in a job you dislike. To really win at work, it’s vital to understand that there’s no such thing as an overnight success. When you know that quick gains are not what it’s all about, you’ll start to view work as a blessing to be enjoyed, not just endured.

Go above and beyond

To really succeed at work, you have to give it your all. If you go above and beyond, do the unexpected extras and consistently serve at the highest levels, you’ll be rewarded in the long run. It’s all about bringing energy, passion and focus to what you do. As Thomas Edison once said, “Opportunity is missed by most people because it’s dressed in overalls and looks a lot like work.” Become a hard worker and, not only will you stand out in the marketplace, you’ll experience much more opportunity!

Focus on your legacy

When you show others how work is central to living the good life, you’ll become a positive role model and profoundly impact those who come after you. When you view work as a blessing, not a curse, you’ll inspire and motivate other people to think and behave the same way. Remember, true success is all about drive, determination and dedication over the long haul.

When it’s done in the right way, work offers far more than just financial rewards – it’s the key to the good life. To learn more about the blessings of work, listen to the latest episode of “It’s a Good Life”.
