Stay In, Work Out

Healthy habits matter and upgrading the routines in your day will help to keep you calm and motivated. If it feels selfish to focus on your fitness, think again! Exercise is a proven way to de-stress and to boost your immune system. Whether you’re just getting started or ready to make major gains, don’t be sidelined by COVID-19. Try these ideas to get back in the game.

Exercise at home. It’s clear that small tweaks in our lifestyles won’t cut it. We need as many people as possible to stay physically separated from anyone but their immediate household to help flatten the curve of COVID-19 cases.

Just because your gym is closed doesn’t mean you have to throw in the towel. Find a space in your home, garage or yard (ideally 6ft. x 6 ft.) where you can move. If you have dumbbells, resistance bands or other equipment, you’re a step ahead. If you don’t, you can load up a laundry basket for deadlifts or fill empty milk jugs with sand to load your movements. Body weight exercises are also very effective to get or stay fit. We’ve got program ideas you can try so read on for more!

Follow along with Rico’s Reps. Have you joined the 5 Circle Fit Challenge? Brian Buffini designed this challenge to help you get a rolling start back into everyday life once the coronavirus subsides. Each essential area of life (spiritual, family, business, financial and personal) is interconnected and we’ve added fitness guidance to the “personal” circle to make it easy to succeed.

Each week during the challenge, the Buffini’s personal trainer will provide a series of exercises you can do at home! It’s also suggested that you walk a mile a day or ride your bike for five miles.

Zoom with your local gym and trainers (if you have one). This pandemic will have financial impact on business including gyms and studios. If you belong to one and they have shifted their offerings to online classes, join them (and donate)! If you have been working with a personal trainer, see if you can train virtually with FaceTime or Zoom.

Most have developed programs that require little to no equipment that you can do in a small space.

  • Stream a program: There is no shortage of streaming content to make you sweat. We’ve done the heavy lifting to uncover a few of our favorites that are currently FREE!
  • Beachbody on Demand (BOD):  One of the most respected names in fitness with proven, progressive programs. Head’s up: the free trial includes a Beachbody Coach that will motivate you to stay on track and help you choose a program or service when your trial ends.
  • Nike Training Club (NTC):  This app lets you filter workouts by categories like muscle group, training goals (strength, cardio, yoga, and mobility) or follow-along with a progressive program led by a celebrity trainer. The Premium version is FREE until further notice as a way to keep people active at home. Head’s up: the free trial includes entry into Nike’s marketing funnel for special offers and incentives.
  • Yoga for Beginners: Looking to start a yoga practice but not sure how to jump in? This app is a great place for beginner-friendly workouts, which are divided into three types of yoga: vinyasa, hatha, and restorative. Each video takes you through the poses and breathwork to help you learn and develop your practice. Head’s up: the app is free and a great entry point!

Train for a 5K (or marathon). In case you missed it, Hal Higdon, renowned runner, author and coach was a guest on The Brian Buffini Show in March. Listen in to hear his unique system to increase your distance in a safe way. Just remember to keep your distance from other walkers and joggers on your route.
