Even in a challenging and sometimes negative world, young people can still do exceptional things if they follow the 5 C’s of achievement. Here’s how:

Conformity

Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “To be yourself in a world that’s constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment.” If you want to succeed and be happy in life, don’t be average. Instead of simply conforming to what other people think you should be doing, look for ‘tuning fork’ moments. What has resonated with you since you were a child? How can you lean into what you like and renew your mind? This is how you will find out who you are and what you should be doing.

Curiosity

Despite the age-old saying, ignorance is definitely not bliss. Developing a healthy curiosity about the world is vital to success and happiness. Michelangelo once wrote, “Ancora imparo: I am still learning.” When you consciously embrace curiosity, it makes every day a wonder and a new learning opportunity. We are always at our best when we’re growing, so resolve to stay curious, no matter what stage you’re at…or what age you are!

Courtesy

If you really want to stand out in today’s world, be courteous and respectful. Unfortunately, common courtesy is no longer common. The basics of ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ are becoming rarer. This means that people who are mannerly and courteous in their words and actions are noticed and remembered for all the right reasons. As author Lewis Carroll said, “Courtesy is a small act, but it packs a mighty wallop.”

Courage

We all try to protect those we love from negativity and failure but, the truth is, often the adversity you face in life is the making of you. Difficult or challenging experiences are not something to be avoided. They don’t mean you’ve made a wrong turn or that you’re doing the wrong thing. When you’re faced with adversity, dig deep and have the courage to keep going, hoping and believing in yourself. Having courage is simply taking one step more than you think you can.

Character

You are already wonderfully made and designed, with your own unique gifts and abilities. It’s important to be comfortable and confident in your own skin, but it’s also vital to improve certain character qualities, such as your integrity or work ethic. To develop and grow your character, start by establishing good habits. You could commit to exercising more, reading an educational book or listening to an informative podcast like “It’s a Good Life.” Little habits can bring big changes!

Even in these uncertain times, the future is still bright for young people. Listen to the latest episode of “It’s a Good Life” to learn more.
