I recently watched one of those “suggested for you” videos that popped up in my Facebook news feed. It was a clip of the band Semisonic playing their late ‘90’s hit “Closing Time” and giving a rundown of the truth behind the message in the song. For years it was commonly thought that this ditty was about the end of the night goings on at a bar. People are leaving, they are gathering up their stuff, and heading out into the darkness of the night. Well, it turns out that the song is actually about the lead singer’s feelings of his impending parenthood (now you can dominate at your local trivia night. You’re welcome).
You’re probably wondering where all this is going. Well, I tell you all of that to bring your attention to a particular lyric in the song: “every new beginning comes from some other beginnings end.” There it is. The “chew on this” statement…..the idea that nothing new can begin without something else ending. It’s appealing, sad, delightful, scary, intriguing and a ridiculously large number of other adjectives all rolled in that one statement.
As we journey through a new year, I encourage you to take to heart the idea that something exciting is coming. Will it be beautiful? Yes. Will it be ugly? Yes. Will you succeed? Yes. Will you survive? Yes. Will you thrive? Yes. I believe 2016 is going to be a banner year for you. It’s only just beginning.
Sharing the Good Life!
