The Luck of the Irish

Ireland might be a small country, but it’s also one of the most influential in the world. There are three reasons why so many Irish people achieve such phenomenal success worldwide: they have a wishbone, a backbone and a funny bone! These unique principles combine to elevate the Irish to great acclaim on the global stage and they can help you to win too, no matter where you’re from. Here’s how:

Have a Wishbone

Over the past year, people have lost sight of their dreams. Because of Covid-19, many have been in survival mode, just trying to get through every day. However, with the situation improving, now is the perfect time to start making a bucket list again. Write down your dreams, both big and small. Have a vision – a picture of where you want to go and what you want to achieve – and, most importantly, have hope for the future. The Irish always hope and plan for more – it’s one of the key ingredients in their success.

Have a Backbone

If you want to succeed in life, you’ve got to be tough and have a backbone. Life is full of ups and downs. Setbacks are part and parcel of the journey. The key is to keep going, even when you stumble. When something doesn’t work out, don’t give up, keep trying. As the Irish writer Samuel Beckett said, “Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better.” Failure isn’t the opposite of success, it’s part of it. Having a backbone also means being clear on what you stand for. What are your values? What’s important to you? Can you put your name to your work? If you don’t stand for something, you’ll fall for anything!

Have a Funny Bone

It’s vital to take your work seriously, but you should never take yourself too seriously. In today’s world, we need laughter more than ever before. Laughter really is the best medicine, but it can seem like it’s in short supply at the moment. The Irish are world-renown for their sense of humor and it definitely contributes to their success. When you can see the funny side and you know that life should be enjoyed, it’s possible to find something amusing in almost every situation!

These three principles are rare in today’s world but, if you embrace them and incorporate them into your daily life, they can be the making of you. To learn more, listen to the latest episode of “It’s a Good Life.”
