In an effort to protect ourselves from life’s difficulties, we all wear invisible masks every day. These masks do have some benefits – after all, there’s no need to be totally transparent with everyone you meet about every issue in every conversation! However, there’s also a big difference between being transparent about your feelings, worries and struggles and being your authentic self. The truth is, if you’re always wearing a mask, you won’t experience life to the full and you can’t help or serve other people at the highest level.

Recognize The Three Desires

We all have three basic desires – the need for security, control and affection. When these desires are wounded – emotionally, physically or economically – we can start to feel insecure. To cover the pain we’re experiencing, and to try to regain some control, we put on a mask. Unfortunately, the control we seek often ends up controlling us! The first step toward true authenticity is to accept that, in life, there is very little you can control except your attitude, your effort and your energy.

Let The Mask Fall

Letting your mask fall is all about understanding your character and what makes you tick. It takes real strength to be the true you, but it ultimately brings peace. As Bruce Lee once said, “Always be yourself, express yourself, have faith in yourself. Do not go out and look for a successful personality and duplicate it.” You may need to overcome some challenges and heartaches to discover the true you, but knowing who you really are and what your character is about brings the sort of quiet authenticity that is priceless.

Help Others

When you know who you are, you can really impact and help others in a meaningful way. No-one is perfect, so embrace your character, flaws and all. If you have compassion for yourself, you will have more empathy for other people. Work to be the best version of you and then work to be an example to others and help them to be the best that they can be, too.

When you wear a mask all the time, you cheat yourself and others of the blessing of the real you.If you take off your mask and live an authentic life, you’ll become a shining light and a positive influence for other people. To learn more, listen to the latest episode of “It’s a Good Life.”
