What I Learned from Og Mandino

Og Mandino’s “The Greatest Salesman in the World” is a classic guide to success that has improved the lives of millions of people around the world. In a recent “It’s a Good Life” podcast, Brian Buffini shared some of Og’s timeless principles.

Life is a game

In the game of life, most people are just spectators. They sit in the stands observing and even criticizing the players, but they never really play themselves. The thing is, if you want to win, you can’t just watch! You have to get out on the field and play by the rules, even if that means struggle and sacrifice. Ask yourself: What does success look like for your business, your finances, your health, your spiritual life and your relationships? If you follow the rules of success, you’ll get in the game, become a pro and prosper in all 5 circles.

Embrace failure

Og once said, “Failure will never overtake me if my determination to succeed is strong enough.” We all make mistakes, try things that don’t work out or say things we wish we hadn’t. The key to success is to figure out how we can learn and grow from our failures. A powerful way to do this is to take the time to reflect. Every day in a notebook, simply jot down what went well and what didn’t. Soon, you’ll spot patterns and start charting your path to success. Tremendous transformation happens one day at a time and continuous reflection can help us to learn from our mistakes and get back in the game.

No-one is an island

Many people find it very difficult to receive help. Taking advice or assistance from someone else makes them feel lacking, or even weak. The fact is, no-one is born with all the answers.  Success cannot be achieved alone. Og used to say that there are three key words to unlock success: I need help.
