Self-confidence is one of the biggest factors differentiating success from failure, in business and in life. Brian recently interviewed leadership expert and bestselling author Dr. Ivan Joseph to learn about the traits of self-confident people and uncover how anyone can develop more grit, resilience and self-belief. Here are some of the top takeaways:

Self-confidence is a skill you can learn

Many people believe that self-confidence is something you’re born with – you either have it or you don’t. The truth is, self-confidence is a skill that can be honed and developed over time. When you do something repeatedly, such as tying your shoe or driving your car, it becomes automatic – you can complete it without thought or distraction. To become more self-confident, you have to keep practicing the task at hand. That way, you’ll develop a genuine heartfelt belief in your skill and ability.

Stop the negative self-talk

No matter who you are or where you are in life, you will suffer from doubt and anxiety at some point. To stop negative self-talk in its tracks, take a leaf from professional athletes and use centering exercises as quick physical triggers. Clap your hands together or snap your fingers, take a deep inhalation and then immediately replace the negative thought with a positiveaffirmation. Dr. Joseph likes to say “I am the captain of my ship and the master of my fate,” but you could just say, “I got this!”

There’s no such thing as failure, only feedback

If you want to develop more self-confidence you have to reframe how you interpret failure. Don’t be down on yourself – instead, ask how a perceived failure can set you up for success. Confident people interpret feedback differently. They accept failure as part of the process and then they ask themselves what they can learn from the experience. It’s important to move through the process quickly and get to the learning point because when you’re consumed with shame you don’t reflect on the teachable moments.

Write a letter to yourself

Writing a personal brag sheet with all your accomplishments might sound a little strange, but when you’re faced with a difficulty or a challenge, it’s really helpful to be able to remind yourself of everything you’ve already achieved. Whether it’s raising a family, having a successful career or reaching sporting milestones, write yourself a letter of all your successes and then re-read it when you encounter a roadblock. This will help you to get motivated and remind you that you did it before and you can do it again!

As Dr. Ivan Joseph says, “The process of becoming great and becoming confident is filled and grounded in hope and optimism.” To learn more about boosting your self-confidence and achieving high-performance results, tune in to the latest episode of “It’s a Good Life”.
